Microsoft’s 64GB Surface Pro tablet will have just 23GB of free space

When the new Microsoft Surface Pro tablet releases in the US next week, users may be surprised at the amount of free memory they actually get.

The $899 64GB version will have almost two-thirds of its storage already used up, leaving just 23GB of free space.

The larger 128GB tablet will come with only 83GB free while rival Apple’s new $999 128GB iPad is expected to do much better with 115GB of free space.

The memory issue for the Microfoft tablets is because the Surface Pro will use of the full version of the Windows 8 rather than the slimmed-down Windows RT installed on the cheaper Surface tablets:

  • Windows 8 alone takes up 20GB of space,
  • the OS claims even more memory for a ‘recovery partition’ to back up users’ data on their tablets
  • Add in the Surface Pro’s built-in apps and the trial version of Office 2013 it ships with, and users of the 64GB version will find most of their devices already full.

Other tablets, including the iPad, the Surface RT, and Android-powered devices, run on specially slimmed down operating systems which dispense with much of the functionality of those found on laptop and desktop computers to save space.
