The new Microsoft Surface Pro tablet is due to go on sale by the end of the month, according to CNET.

It said that calls to stores throughout the US about the new tablet led to a stock answer of it being available at the “end of the month” but that one store said it would be on sale on January 26.

And that date does seem to make sense because when Microsoft announced the Windows 8 Surface last year it said that a Windows 8 Pro model would follow about 90 days later.

Given that Windows 8 saw general availability on October 26 then January 26 would be right in the timetable as originally planned by Microsoft.

The Windows 8 Pro Surface tablet will come in two versions:

  • 64GB standalone version at $899
  • 128GB standalone version at $999

It will also have an Intel Ivy Bridge processor, a 16:9 ClearType display with a 1,920 x 1,080 resolution and a Mini DisplayPort which can drive an external display up to 2560 X 1440 resolution.
